Progress Schools The Hive are praised by OFSTED

Progress Schools Wirral is celebrating after their latest Ofsted report which delivers a resounding seal of approval awarding them a ‘Good’ rating in every area.

Inspectors spent two days scrutinising the school and found staff were providing a happy and safe environment for pupils who enjoyed their time in school and were able to discuss any worries or concerns they had.

The report highlighted the school leader’s and staff’s effective work in improving engagement and success in learning with many pupils being able to reintegrate into mainstream schools after a short time.

A ‘logically ordered curriculum’ identified the knowledge and skills pupils needed to acquire and the standard of reading and opportunities for sport alongside support for wellbeing and mental health and a focus on keeping pupils safe were commended.

“Staff focus on improving pupils’ language, communication, and mathematical skills. Their high expectations help to ensure that most pupils, including pupils with special educational needs and/ or disabilities (SEND), acquire new knowledge in most subjects” the report said.

Staff reported being happy working at the school and felt supported by leaders in managing their own wellbeing.

The report went on to highlight how pupils are actively encouraged to become responsible citizens, it said: “Pupils are encouraged to become active and responsible citizens. They like to give their point of view on the pupils’ forum, and to raise funds for various charities”

The report also noted the emphasis placed on cultural and religious diversity education, which is embedded throughout the curriculum.

Other positive comments from the report include:

“Staff help pupils to manage their own feelings and emotions. As a result, pupils’ behaviour improves soon after starting school. Lessons are rarely disrupted by poor behaviour.”

“Staff work closely with parents and external professionals to ensure that pupils get the help that they need to access the curriculum.”

Based in The Hive Youth Zone in Birkenhead, the school prides itself on its community values and the scope of opportunities and extracurricular activities for its 19 pupils.
