Unlocking a student’s passion can often be the key to helping them reconnect with education. For Elouise, that passion was poetry. Through creative expression, she found a way to process her experiences, communicate her thoughts, and rebuild confidence in both herself and her education.

Before joining Progress Schools Northampton, Elouise experienced significant difficulties with engagement at school. Her attendance was low, she often disengaged from lessons, and relationships with staff could at times become strained.

When Elouise first arrived at Progress Schools, she responded positively to the welcoming and nurturing environment. Initially, however, she worried that making progress might result in being returned to mainstream education, which affected her consistency during the early stages of placement. Once reassured she could remain at Progress Schools while developing at her own pace, she began to settle and engage more positively.

Staff implemented a structured support framework tailored to her needs. Daily check-ins with a dedicated key worker provided consistency and a safe space for reflection and emotional regulation. Pastoral support from key worker Racheal also helped Elouise build trust, develop resilience, and feel secure within the school environment. As her confidence grew, Elouise became increasingly engaged in lessons and school activities, with her attendance increasing to 76.2%. She developed trusting relationships with staff and peers and began embracing new opportunities.

The school also maintained strong communication with home, building a positive relationship with Elouise’s mum, Donna. Reflecting on the impact of the support, Donna shared:

“If it was not for Progress Schools and her key worker Racheal, Elouise would not be in education. The support from staff has been invaluable and her voice is always heard.”

Beyond her poetry, Elouise has contributed positively to the wider school community. She has taken pride in improving the classroom environment and has become a positive role model, regularly encouraging other students to attend lessons and engage with learning.

Racheal, Elouise’s teacher, celebrated her progress, saying:

“Elouise is a pleasure to teach, and it has been rewarding to observe her continued growth and confidence as she flourishes both personally and academically.”

Creative expression has become central to Elouise’s development. Through poetry, she has explored themes surrounding mental health and personal experiences with honesty and emotional awareness. Towards the end of last year, Elouise wrote an original poem to mark Progress Schools’ 10th anniversary. The piece reflected her personal journey and the positive impact education has had on her life. It was included in the school’s time capsule and displayed within the school, marking a significant personal achievement.

Elouise is now looking towards the future with renewed ambition. She hopes to pursue a career in hairdressing while also exploring opportunities within childcare, with plans to progress onto an apprenticeship pathway. Alongside these ambitions, she is currently preparing a collection of poems for self-publication – something she once never imagined possible before joining Progress Schools. Academically, she remains focused on achieving her GCSEs next year while continuing to grow both personally and creatively.

Elouise’s journey highlights the impact education can have when it is adapted to meet the individual needs, strengths, and interests of a young person. By encouraging her passion for poetry and ensuring she felt heard and supported, Progress Schools has helped her reconnect with education, rebuild her confidence, and recognise her own potential.
