For many young people, being excluded from school can feel like a setback, but it doesn’t have to define their future. At Progress Schools The Hive, we provide targeted interventions for students following an exclusion. Young people join us for a shorter period, during which we work with them to address the behaviours that led to their exclusion, rebuild confidence and develop the skills needed for a successful return to mainstream school.

Tom’s journey is a powerful example of this approach in action. Through personalised support, relational practice and targeted interventions, he rebuilt his confidence, developed the skills to manage his emotions and successfully transitioned back into mainstream education.

Tom joined Progress Schools The Hive in May 2025 following an exclusion from his previous school. During his induction, staff took time to get to know him, understand the challenges he had experienced and identify the support he needed to succeed. Thanks to the nurturing environment and strong relationships built from the very beginning, Tom settled quickly and was able to move onto a full-time timetable within just a few days.

During the early stages of his placement, Tom found it difficult to maintain focus in lessons and was easily distracted. Staff recognised that he would benefit from additional classroom support, with a teaching assistant working alongside him to help organise his thoughts and maintain engagement during lessons. Alongside this, consistent routines and trusting relationships helped him feel safe, understood and ready to engage with learning.

As those relationships developed, Tom began to flourish. His enthusiasm for learning grew, and he became an active participant in classroom discussions, contributing thoughtful ideas with empathy and respect. He also began supporting classmates who found aspects of maths challenging, demonstrating growing confidence and a willingness to help others. His creative writing became a particular strength, with his imaginative storytelling and sense of humour bringing enjoyment to both staff and peers.

Alongside his academic progress, staff worked closely with Tom to support his emotional wellbeing. He had previously experienced difficulties managing his emotions and could become overwhelmed in challenging situations. In September 2025, Progress Schools arranged counselling through Brook Counselling, complementing the daily pastoral support and relational approach provided by staff throughout his placement.

Together, these interventions had a significant impact. Tom developed a much greater understanding of his emotional triggers and learned effective strategies to regulate his emotions and remove himself from situations before they escalated. Over time, behavioural incidents became increasingly rare and eventually stopped altogether, reflecting the remarkable progress he had made in both his confidence and self-awareness.

Tom’s commitment to his education was reflected in his outstanding attendance, which improved to 95% during his placement. As his confidence, emotional resilience and readiness to return to mainstream education continued to grow, he was referred to the Fair Access Panel (FAP) in December 2025.

Following a successful meeting with a high school in February 2026, Tom secured a place and returned to mainstream education, where he is now thriving in Year 9.

The impact of his journey was reflected in a message from Tom’s mum, Elizabeth, several months after his reintegration:

“Just wanted to send you all a quick email to let you know how Tom is getting on. Last night, we attended an awards ceremony at his new school, where Tom received two awards. We just wanted to say a huge thank you to all of you there. You have all played such a big part in how well he is doing now, and we really appreciate all the support, care and encouragement you gave him.”

Tom’s story demonstrates how targeted intervention, strong relationships and personalised support can help young people address the challenges that led to exclusion and prepare for a successful return to mainstream education. By focusing on rebuilding confidence, developing emotional resilience and nurturing a sense of belonging, Progress Schools The Hive enabled Tom not only to re-engage with learning but to thrive beyond his placement. His successful reintegration and continued achievements highlight the lasting impact that the right support, delivered at the right time, can have on a young person’s future.
