Every young person learns differently, and for some, achieving success starts with having the right support and encouragement. Oscar’s journey is a testament to the impact this approach can have. Through tailored teaching, consistent encouragement and strong relationships, he developed the resilience and independence to achieve milestones he once thought were beyond his reach.
When Oscar joined Progress Schools in September 2025, he faced significant barriers to learning. Delays in cognitive processing, working memory and literacy meant he often found it difficult to decode information, retain new learning and complete tasks independently. These challenges could affect both his confidence and engagement in lessons.
Recognising Oscar’s individual needs, staff developed a personalised approach that enabled him to learn at his own pace. Lessons were carefully adapted, with instructions broken down into manageable steps, key concepts revisited regularly and learning reinforced through repetition. Consistent encouragement from staff helped Oscar build confidence in his own abilities, while strong, trusting relationships created an environment where he felt safe to ask for support and persevere when learning became challenging.
Over the course of the year, Oscar continued to make progress, building his confidence and independence. He is now much more willing to attempt tasks independently, remains engaged in lessons for longer periods and has developed greater resilience when faced with challenges.
One of Oscar’s proudest achievements came at the end of the academic year when he successfully sat his GCSE examinations. For a young person who had once found many aspects of learning overwhelming, this represented a significant personal milestone and reflected the determination he had shown throughout his placement.
Alongside his academic achievements, Oscar maintained a good attendance record of 94%. His commitment to attending school consistently played an important role in the progress he made.
Beyond the classroom, Oscar discovered a passion that helped shape his ambitions for the future. Through his cookery lessons at Progress Schools, he developed a genuine interest in food preparation and catering, inspiring him to pursue a career as a chef. He has now secured a provisional place at Aylesbury College, where he hopes to continue developing his culinary skills and work towards his future career.
Oscar’s story shows how personalised education, positive relationships and high expectations can help young people overcome barriers and recognise their own potential. By adapting learning to meet his individual needs and supporting him every step of the way, Progress Schools has helped him build the confidence and skills needed to take the next steps towards his future.
